Back Into BMX Racing

About 10 years ago I bought my son a BMX bike, and while out shopping for it we also found a 'cruiser' which is a BMX bike with 24" wheels versus the typical 20" wheels found on racing BMX bikes. We decided to try BMXing, well Mitch wasn't all too thrilled about it so we only ended up going once, and since then my Cruiser has been sitting around.

Well my step son's birthday this past spring came around and I decided to get him a BMX bike, one more for messing around, not a real racing bike, thinking maybe he would like to try racing. Well he decided he did want to try it, so the summer of 2008 we went to the local BMX track (www.pineviewparkbmx.com) right here in St. Cloud MN. He tried it and got really excited about it… I also drug out my cruiser, filled up the starting to dry-rot tires and went with him, we had a blast.

As we went a few more times and he continued to show increasing interest, I called my son Mitch… "hey, do you still have your old 'Diamond Back' BMX racer yet?" Knowing that he was in need of funds to move to Texas, so I bought it from him, took it to my friends over at (www.revolutioncycleandski.com) and we powder coated the frame (bright blue), put new cranks in it and new wheels, stem, seat, basically built a new bike on an old frame and fork. Now Jim is racing that bike! As long as he keeps his grades in line! (racing can be a great incentive for kids!)

I've since updated a few parts on my old cruiser which is a Bontrager from pre-Trek Buyout. (It's a RAD bike according to Mike at Revolution!) With a new Crank set, tires and pedals it is a fun bike to ride! And I've yet to see another one like it!
The Guys at Revolution treat us really good, and in talking with Harry, Ben, and Mike, I know they will never steer a customer in the wrong direction, they are passionate about bicycling and know their stuff… That is why when I decided to build a 20" BMX racer I couldn't go anywhere else. This thing is RAD in the RADest sense of the word! FELT Sector xxl frame (so it matches size really close to my cruiser) All Supercross front end (fork, stem, and Bars), Shimano DXR crank, blue profile hubs and Bombshell rims custom laced up with black spokes! Titanium railed Crupi seat matching Crupi pad set. This thing is so fast!!! Way faster than this old guy can ride!

As we continued to get involved I invited my God son Mason to come along, he got hooked bad! At 7 years old it is cool to see him get excited about it. He started off riding a very heavy bicycle and while poking around at the track I found a sweet used GT racing bike! So we scooped that up for him! He is really enjoying it and his mom gets to use BMX as leverage to keep him in line too!

Of course not to be left out my step daughter thought maybe she would like to try it, seeing some other girls, like home town hero and national pro girls number one plate holder Alise Post doing it, I'm sure helped. She tried it on Jim's street bike, and after a few times and even a pretty hard crash, she still wanted to keep racing! We picked up a new HARO Group 1 Expert for her!

So we've acquired a fleet of BMX bikes, and try to go to Pine View during the summer race schedule at least once a week, and the plans are to go to Lino Lakes to race at Rehbein's Indoor BMX track a couple times a month, they race on Saturday's and Sunday's. If you happen to be around keep your eyes peeled for Team Donahue Harley-Davidson/Revolution Cycle and Ski.
